While it’s true that spring – and the warm weather it brings – is taking its own sweet time to arrive in the Twin Cities area this year, we all know that sooner or later the cooler temps will warm and spring will turn to summer.
And with this warm weather comes warm-weather fun. It’s a time of year when people come out of hibernation and engage in many of the activities and events that make living here not only tolerable, but special.
Along with cabin time, boat rides and bonfires, there are plenty of fun things to do in and around the Cities. Here are a few of my favorites:
There seems to be no shortage of farmers markets around town, meaning you can find fresh produce and other goods just about any day of the week. Along with local fruits and vegetables, you can find meats, treats, handmade goods and a variety of other products at many of the markets. Minnesota Grown is a great website that contains a directory of all Minnesota farmers markets, their locations and hours of operation; check it out here.
The warm weather provides a perfect backdrop to stroll and browse, and what better place to do that than at an art festival? While some of them take place indoors, you can find many at area parks and lakes. Some even take up city blocks, such as the Edina Art Fair in June, and the Uptown Art Fair in August. There is something about seeing live music outside, and luckily you have many opportunities to do that in the warmer months. Whether you want a big concert experience at Target Field or TCF Bank Stadium, or you appreciate a smaller venue like the Lake Harriet Band Shell or the Minnesota Zoo, there are options a ‘plenty, both locally and throughout the state.
Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, many Minneapolis parks host live music in the evenings and show movies on a big screen at dusk. It’s fun for the whole family and a great way to spend a summer evening together…as long as you have bug spray! For a schedule of what’s playing when, click here.
It’s no secret that the Twin Cities is a big biking community. The Chain of Lakes, Midtown Greenway, Mississippi River and the Grand Rounds provide amazing paths to explore and scenery to take in via bike. Plus, many streets throughout the Metro area have bicycle-protected lanes. Want to get out and explore some of Minnesota’s 4,000 miles of paved biking trails? Click here for some inspiration.
Of course, there are so many other great things going on all summer long, from food and brewery tours, to Segway tours, food truck festivals and fireworks. There are some fantastic cultural events like Northern Spark and Sommerfest, and a lot of sports, from MLS soccer at Allianz Field to the X Games in downtown Minneapolis.
I hope you are invited by the warm weather to get out and enjoy this marvelous area we call home. And, if you are so inclined, I’d love to know what your favorite warm-weather event is. Please contact me and fill me in!
